Over the past three months, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) along with the local police have conducted a series of raids across Pune and have busted several gangs involved in milk adulteration racket.
Besides, the cops have arrested 48 people in connection with the case and have named 22 prominent dairies in the city that were involved in adulterating milk.
However, barely a few days after the arrests were made, 41 accused were released on bail. But this didn't deter FDA officials from continuing with their investigations.
Tasteless chemicals
The FDA had sent samples of seized milk to the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) that recently submitted a report stating that the samples contained traces of detergent powder along with some other chemicals.
"These chemicals are tasteless, odourless and thus, cannot be traced easily. However, they are very harmful for human consumption," said Sanjay Patil, joint commissioner, FDA. Patil added that now, they have enough evidence to nail the accused. "It's quite a big racket and we believe that several prominent people are involved in it," claimed Patil.
Copies of the lab reports have been sent to police officials investigating the case. Meanwhile, cops continue the crackdown in the city.
