Schools warned against fee hike

After a MiD DAY report on a proposed fee hike by a city school that violated a state government resolution, the deputy director of education issued a warning to all private schools on Friday.

The warning came in the form of a circular that said schools are not allowed to hike school fees at their own will. It has further told schools that they face punitive action and even de-recognition lest they disobey.

On Thursday, MiD DAY had approached the deputy director's office and pointed out how Camp-based The Aranhas' Rosary School had angered parents by sending them a circular on a proposed fee hike for the academic year 2010-11 despite a state government resolution (GR) dated March 4, 2010. The GR states no school would hike fees until it obtain prior permission from the fee regulatory committee.

"As per the norm, schools should first submit a proposal to hike fees for 2009-10, that is the last academic year, which many have not done," Deputy Director Sunil Magar said. "In 2010-11, they can increase fees by 10 per cent, keeping base fees as 2009-2010. But these schools are hiking fees without mandatory permission."
