As the mission admission starts today, city school decides to give weightage to single parent for nursery aspirants

The grueling wait in the queues for forms, nail biting thrill at the draw of lots and going through a sea of information and procedures of various schools. All for getting your ward admitted to nursery in a reputed school.

But, for a single parent it could be a bit easier, as a city school has decided to add weightage to their children in admissions to nursery. Various schools allot points on different considerations while accepting admission forms and the draw lots to decide the final list of selected students.

"Till last year we didn't have any points for single parent or first child. We noticed that they faced a lot of problems in getting their kids admitted to schools. Therefore, we have decided to give five points to the wards of single parent or first child of any parent," said Usha Ram, principal of Laxman Public School, Hauz Khas Enclave.

Similarly, Air Force Bal Bharti School had contemplated adding priority to children of single parent this year but it has postponed the process till next year. "We had discussed increasing the points for single parent but somehow things did not materialize. We will reconsider it next year," said Anand Swaroop, principal, Air Force Bal Bharti School, Lodhi Road.

No points on parents' income

The school has also decided to award no points on the income and educational qualifications of the parents.u00a0
"I think education is the basic right of a child. It has nothing to do with parents' income or educational qualification," she said.

D-Day today

The month-long exercise for parents of tiny tots is set to begin with the sale of nursery admission forms today and most schools are expected to put their admission criteria online. Some schools have also added weightage under the heads of inter-caste marriage, vegetarian family, linguistic and regional minorities.

Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal Springdales School said, "We believe in inclusive and holistic learning for children from different backgrounds. This was the only reason for awarding points based on this criterion." The school had awarded ten points for applicants from linguistic and regional minority last year.

Uniform schedule

Till last year, schools followed different schedules for nursery admissions. However, this year onwards, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed schools to sell forms between December 15 and January 15. As a result, parents have been spared the stress of keeping track of important dates for different schools.

For the first time, some schools like DPS, R K Puram, The Indian School and Salwan Montessori will sell forms for 30 days till January 15 giving ample time to parents to apply.
