UP: All accused in madrasa gang-rape case acquitted

Two years after the madrasa gang rape case rocked Uttar Pradesh, a court here has acquitted all the five accused for lack of evidence.

Additional Sessions Judge Brijesh Kumar Mishra acquitted the five for want of evidence and the failure of victims to identify the accused.

"The prosecution has failed to produce any evidence of the complicity of any of the accused in the crime," the Judge said on Saturday.

Two minor girls were gang-raped on January 17, 2007 after they were dragged out of a madrasa in Kareli area of the city.

Police initially registered a case of 'misbehaviour and teasing' after madarsa's manager lodged a complaint. The incident and subsequent police action sparked an outcry with both Congress and BSP saying an attempt was being made to save the real culprits.

The case was investigated afresh after the Mayawati-led BSP was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.
