As resident doctors protested against the attack on doctors by a patient in Yavatmal’s government hospital, the association has now written a letter to the Minister of Medical Education of Maharashtra raising their concern and asking for security measures.

The student council in Yavatmal’s government hospital had a meeting with the authority along with the minister on Friday morning related to the attack and further security measures to be taken.

According to the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), the lack of safety and security measures in government-run hospitals are the main reason for such attacks on medical professionals by patients and their relatives.

The doctor who was attacked by the patient suffered a major injury on his neck on Thursday. The injured doctor was taken for surgery and admitted to the ICU ward.

Demanding security measures, the central MARD representatives in the letter, mentioned, “One police beat chowky in the premises consisting of one PSI should be set up for safety reasons. At least one trained security staff should be deployed in each ward. Metal detectors and baggage checkers should be installed at the main entrance of the hospital. An emergency alarm system should be installed at the hospitals to alert the police. An entry pass system should be installed at the main gate and only one relative should be allowed with one patient inside the ward.”

In their letter, the MARD representatives also mentioned that in the past, on November 2021, Dr Ashok Pal was killed in Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College (GMC) following which the authority decided to increase security in the hospital along with setting up police beat chowky inside the premises.

Dr Dr Sagar Dole, MARD representative from Yavatmal said that the hospital authority assured them "various security measures to be taken" for the safety of the doctors.

“While most of the demands such as installing CCTV cameras, constructing a compound wall and installing flashlights were fulfilled in the past, important demands such as increasing security guards and setting up police chowky were not fulfilled,” he said.

“Lack of staff was a major reason why they were not able to increase the police and security guards in the hospital, but now, the hospital authority and the government have given us assurance that following safety measures will be implemented soon,” Dr Dole added.

Other demands of MARD included: “Strict action against whoever is responsible for attacking on-duty doctors and other medical staff. Regular police patrolling and guard patrolling five times a day, in the premises is needed.”

The resident doctors across Maharashtra protested on Friday against the attack on doctors in a Yavatmal-based government hospital by wearing black ribbons on duty.
