Israel expanded its military assault deeper into the northern Gaza Strip as the U.N. and medical staff expressed fears over airstrikes hitting closer to hospitals, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have sought shelter alongside thousands of wounded.


The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has reached 8,306, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, more than 110 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them civilians slain in the initial Hamas rampage that started the fighting October 7. In addition, 239 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.

More than 20 people including police and civilians were injured when protesters stormed a Russian Makhachkala airport in Dagestan. Officials said ten people are in hospitals, with two in critical condition. Several hundred people broke into the airport’s building and landing area after the arrival of a regular flight from Tel Aviv. The police have arrested several rioters.

IDF carries out strikes in Syria

The Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes at multiple sites in southern Syria in response to rocket fire on the Golan Heights hours earlier, Times of Israel reported in the early hours of Monday. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that it struck launchers responsible for the cross-border fire. “In response to the launches, the IDF attacked the launchers from where they were carried out from,” IDF said.

Largest shipment of aid enters Gaza

Nearly three dozen trucks entered Gaza on Sunday in the largest aid convoy since the war between Israel and Hamas began, but humanitarian workers said the assistance still fell desperately short of needs after thousands of people broke into warehouses to take flour and basic hygiene products Israel has allowed only a trickle of aid to enter. On Sunday, 33 trucks carrying water, food and medicine entered the only border crossing from Egypt, a spokesperson said.
