This art, which used to be a main source of income, is now at risk of disappearing. The Kumar people are known for making clay utensils along the Brahmaputra River, but modern competition and a lack of resources are making it hard for them to survive. About 120 families live in the village, most of whom are below the poverty line, facing significant economic challenges. They also struggle to get the special clay needed for pottery and receive little support from the government. Without immediate help, the rich cultural heritage of the Kumar community could be lost forever, leaving them in a shadow of uncertainty

25 August,2024 12:14 PM ISTThe flood situation in Assam's Barpeta district is still grim, as over 1.35 lakh people have been affected. Many flood-affected people have been forced to live along with domestic animals on higher lands after the flood waters inundated their houses. Assam floods over the past month has resulted in the loss of life, extensive damage to infrastructure, road closures, crop destruction, and livestock loss. Approximately 500 families live in the Rowmari Pathar area, and most have lost their lands and homes due to erosion and flood problems. The current flood has affected nearly 140,000 people and submerged 179 villages in the district.
06 July,2024 05:55 PM ISTA heavy flood like situation persists in Assam's Nagaon. Floods in Assam have so far claimed 46 lives. According to the flood report of Assam State DisasterManagement Authority (ASDMA), 8 people died in the last 24 hours in the state including 2 in Sonitpur district, one each in Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath and Tinsukia district, taking the total death toll to 46 while 3 others are missing. The overall flood situation in the state is still critical as over 16.25 lakh people of 29 districts have been affected by the second wave of flood. More than 25 villages have been affected and the flood waters submerged 1099.5 hectares of crop area. Many people have been forced to leave their homes and are now taking shelter on roads and higher land.

Meanwhile, the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 came into effect on June 22 amid intensifying rows. The law aims to prevent unfair means in public examinations and common entrance tests held across the country. The Act also prohibits disclosing exam-related confidential info before time, entry of unauthorised people to exam centres to create disruptions. The offences will be punishable with imprisonment between three and five years, and a fine up to Rs 10 lakh. The offences under the new law will also be cognizable, non-bailable, and non-compoundable.

13 March,2024 06:56 PM ISTA day after CAA was implemented in India, AASU on March 12, held a massive protest march against the law. The march was led by Assam Students' Union chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya. Holding bamboo torches, placards and posters, the massive crowd raised slogans against the Government. Samujjal Bhattacharya during the protest called CAA to be communal, unconstitutional, anti-India, anti-northeast. Notably, Union Home Ministry on March 11 notified rules for implementation of CAA days ahead of LS Polls 2024. The Act aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
