The Mumbai city woke up to a hazy morning on the 30th December, as smog blanketed large parts of Mumbai, reducing visibility and causing concerns among residents. There is a noticeable heaviness in the air, and the Air Quality Index (AQI) has deteriorated significantly, raising health worries for the people of Mumbai. On December 29th, Mumbai experienced thick smog, worsening the already poor air quality. Experts point to a combination of factors contributing to this pollution – localised emissions, winter moisture, and dust travelling all the way from West Asia. A dust storm originating in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan is adding to Mumbai’s woes, further worsening the air quality. This is not the first time the city has experienced such conditions. A similar situation occurred three times in 2022, each time making the air quality even worse.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Singh, 92, was brought to the emergency department in the evening in a critical condition after "sudden loss of consciousness", AIIMS said. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and his predecessors Sonia and Rahul Gandhi rushed to AIIMS after learning about his condition. On December 21, a team from the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police arrested a Pakistan-trained militant named Javed Munshi. He is a known expert in making improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and handling weapons. Munshi is linked to the banned terrorist group Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM). The arrest took place near the India-Bangladesh border, in the Canning area of South 24 Parganas. This operation was carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Kolkata Police together, based on secret information. Javed Munshi will be presented before the Alipore court soon.

Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led a delegation to the Election Commission on Wednesday, accusing the BJP of a large-scale plan to delete voters' names in Delhi before the upcoming Assembly elections.
