The flooding is suspected to have been caused by the opening of an underground water channel. Following the incident, rescue operations were launched immediately. By January 7, teams from the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, and other agencies had joined the effort, deploying specialized equipment and medical teams to assist in the rescue. Deep divers from the Indian Navy were also brought in to help with the operation. As the rescue mission continues, teams are working around the clock, using advanced equipment to navigate the flooded mine and ensure the safety of the remaining miners.

Many flood-affected people have been forced to live along with domestic animals on higher lands after the flood waters inundated their houses. Assam floods over the past month has resulted in the loss of life, extensive damage to infrastructure, road closures, crop destruction, and livestock loss. Approximately 500 families live in the Rowmari Pathar area, and most have lost their lands and homes due to erosion and flood problems. The current flood has affected nearly 140,000 people and submerged 179 villages in the district.

According to the flood report of Assam State DisasterManagement Authority (ASDMA), 8 people died in the last 24 hours in the state including 2 in Sonitpur district, one each in Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath and Tinsukia district, taking the total death toll to 46 while 3 others are missing. The overall flood situation in the state is still critical as over 16.25 lakh people of 29 districts have been affected by the second wave of flood. More than 25 villages have been affected and the flood waters submerged 1099.5 hectares of crop area. Many people have been forced to leave their homes and are now taking shelter on roads and higher land.
