EAM Jaishankar talked tough on Nov 16 in London, UK as Canadian PM Trudeau’s reiterated allegations against India amid the Nijjar row. EAM Jaishankar categorically stated that no evidence has been provided from the Canadian side in the killing of Nijjar. “If you have reason to make such an allegation, please share the evidence with us,” said Jaishankar. During the conversation, EAM also pointed out ‘fault lines’ of Canadian politics and said it has given space to violent and extreme political opinions. Diplomatic relations between India and Canada soured after PM Trudeau’s allegations against India in killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar. However, recently, PM Justin Trudeau toned down and said ‘fight’ with India is not something Canada wants right now. But in the same speech, PM Trudeau stood by his allegations and accused New Delhi of violating the Vienna Convention by "kicking out" 40 diplomats.

This comes amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A video of the incident has been doing rounds on the internet, where a man can be seen blocking Doraiswami from entering the Gurudwara. Colin Bloom, former advisor to UK government, said that the Khalistan extremism has escalated due to the inability of Western governments to do enough. Bloom stressed that both the British and Canadian governments should take more proactive measures to address this issue. India has flagged the issue with the UK Foreign Office and also the police, according to sources.

On whether US President Joe Biden intends to speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue and whether the allegations could disrupt the US efforts to boost its ties with India, Sullivan said, "I am not going to get into the private diplomatic conversations that have either already happened or going to happen on this topic. Only to say that we have been and will be in contact with Indians at high levels on this issue. It is a matter of concern for us. It is something we take seriously,” said Jake Sullivan.

Trudeau claimed of having “credible allegations of potential link between agents of India in killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar”. While addressing an event in Delhi, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti spoke up on the Nijjar row. Garcetti said that Canada is a dear friend and United States deeply cares for Canada just as it cares for India. Speaking on India-US relations after Trudeau’s allegation Garcetti said, “These moments don't define our relationship, but they certainly can slow down progress”. Thereafter, speaking on the criminal investigation of Nijjar’s murder case Garcetti said that he is not going to tell leaders of both countries what to do. Earlier today, India issued a travel advisory and urged its citizens in Canada to “exercise utmost caution” for those who contemplating travel. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, for whom Trudeau is raising his voice, was a designated terrorist of Khalistan Tiger Force. Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Nijjar was shot dead outside a Gurudwara in Canada’s Surrey in June 2023.

Canada has advised to avoid all travel to the border regions of J&K, Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan.
