The Serbian was made to battle in the first set but stepped up a gear in the second as he sealed a 7-5, 6-3 win over the fourth-seeded Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams advanced into her second straight final with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Barbora Strycova in the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL tournament.
