The duo shared 182 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket to take India's lead to 317 runs on the third day of the match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
Dhoni was finally among runs after an indifferent show in the drawn first two Tests, clobbering a six and 12 fours in his 137-ball knock.
Dravid played to his reputation of gentle run-accumulator, having faced 364 balls, 18 of which were dispatched to the fence for fours.
He completed his second century of the series with a flicked two off left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (2-155) and celebrated it by pumping his fists in the air. He made 104 in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad.
New Zealand bowlers toiled without success in the second session which saw the top-ranked Indians add 123 runs off 30 overs.
Earlier, India slipped to 328-5 inside the first hour of the morning session after resuming at a strong 292-2.
Debutant New Zealand paceman Andy McKay bagged a memorable first Test wicket when Tendulkar (61) edged him behind the stumps in the second over of the day. The batting superstar added just four runs to his overnight 57.
He hit eight fours in his 129-ball knock.
India suffered another blow with the in-form Laxman (12) losing his leg-stump to an inswinger from fast bowler Chris Martin (1-76).
Vettori picked a wicket off his first ball of the day by inducing an inside edge from an off-colour Raina who has just 26 runs from four innings in the series.
