Victory meant the Dutchman, who has said several times he will leave Chelsea at the end of the season to concentrate solely on his job as Russia manager, extended his perfect record in charge of the London club to five out of five wins. The win was set up in the 15th minute when Drogba outmuscled defender Ben Turner and shot home from a narrow angle.

Brazil defender Alex sealed victory in the 72nd minute when he latched onto a cross from Ricardo Quaresma to ensure the Blues were well and truly on their way to Wembley.

"We can be very satisfied with the win and also the way we played," Hiddink told ITV.

Drogba's goal was the rejuvenated Ivory Coast striker's sixth of the season and Hiddink added: "He's dangerous and I think he's very good for the team as well. He's also making little mistakes. He can still improve and he's working outside normal training sessions. He likes to do that and it is paying off."

In the second quarter-final, at the time of going to print, a double strike from Argentine striker Carlos Tevez had Manchester United leading Fulham 2-0 at half-time.

Meanwhile, the only Premiership match of the day between Sunderland and Tottenham ended 1-1.
