IPL should go global, says Callaghan

Such was the atmosphere at the St George's Park Monday night that the locals here were absolutely floored. People here are yet to get over the entertainment provided by the Mumbai Indians.

Former South Africa middle-order batsman Dave Callaghan who hails from this beautiful town is so high on the IPL after the experience that he advised the tournament to go global.

Multiple hosts
"They should make it a global league and play it in different countries around the world, like a World Series.

They can put some more South Africans when they are playing here, England players when they are playing in England and likewise in Australia. But they should not overkill it and play only once a year," Callaghan, who played 29 ODIs for South Africa, told MiD DAY.

Initially when the decision to shift the IPL was taken by the Indian cricket board, there was apprehension whether an Indian domestic tournament being played in a foreign country would work.

Former South African captain Kepler Wessels also gave a thumbs up to the IPL's success in his country.

"It has been an incredible effort by the organising committee to shift the tournament at such a short time. The main fear was that it would not quite catch the imagination of our public like it did in India but it has done that.
And the South African people have loved that and they are coming out and supporting it. I think so far it has been very, very good," said Wessels.
