As England take on Slovakia in a friendly today at the Wembley Stadium, much of the focus in the build-up to the match has been on striker Wayne Rooney. Or his temper to be more precise,u00a0 following his sending-off for Manchester United at Fulham last Saturday.

Manager Fabio Capello severely criticised Rooney calling him a 'crazy man.'

Need the fire
But Former England captain David Beckham yesterday claimed Rooney would struggle to perform at the highest level without such fire.

"That is the way he is, he's passionate about the game, passionate about winning, and when things are not going his way he's like every other player who wants to win. He shows his frustration sometimes it's too much, but if you take that away from a player, it changes him,"

England skipper John Terry agreed with the former skipper. "Some players are born with that passion and Wayne's certainly got it," he said.

"If you try to take it away he won't be the player he is. Let him get on with football and let it do the talking.
"He's got great people around him and if they feel he's stepped out of line, they'll put an arm round him."
