It is true that the Dr H D Kanga Cricket League is considered ideal preparation for the gruelling season ahead for youngsters. But what would a 35-year-old gain from a five-wicket haul? Considering what Rajesh Tandel, who grabbed five wickets and conceded only two runs in 3.3 overs says, the answer could well have a cricketing future.
"Both my sons are crazy about cricket. I want to be their motivator. I try to inspire them through my performances. They feel proud when they show my old (newspaper) clippings to their friends in school. My performances will increase their interest in the game," Tandel told MiD DAY after helping defending champions Greater Mumbai Police beat MIG at Marine Drive yesterday.
The left-armer's sterling performance was a big factor in MIG being bowled out for 73. The policemen, in reply, scored 78 for nine declared to register a win on the basis of first innings lead. MIG ended up with 48-1 in the second innings. Tandel took home the match ball to preserve as a souvenir. "This performance is really special as my employers were not granting me permission to play. It was only when my seniors insisted that I was permitted to play," he said.
