Kushi slams unbeaten 83 in DY Patil’s win

Opening batter Kushi Thakkar scored an unbeaten 83 to propel DY Patil SA to a fluent seven-wicket win over Khandala CC in a first round match of the MCA Women’s knockout cricket tournament at the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana, Kandivali Khandala registered a competitive total of 219-4 in 35 overs with Deeya Sanghvi top-scoring with 61 followed by Samiksha Kharade (44) Riya Thakur (32) and Sanyukta Kini (28 not out).


DY Patil made a strong response with Kushi doing the bulk of the scoring. Her 101-ball knock was studded with nine hits to the boundary ropes. Siya Modi (37) and Shivani Lokhande (48) played good supporting roles in the win. Rutuja Wandne (2-37) was Khandala’s most successful bowler.


In another match, Sporting CC snatched a thrilling six-run win over Dombivali CCA. After scoring 180-8 in 35 overs, thanks to  Dhurvi Patel (54) and Tanvee Chavan ( 24*), the victors restricted Dombivali to 174-5. The batting efforts of Lavnya Shetty (64) and Sayali Bhalerao (39) went in vain. Sanika Khairnar (2-30) and Preeti Chaudhari (2-37) toiled for Dombivali with the ball.

Olympian Devindar Walmiki scored a fine brace as Champions Training Centre (CTC) beat Northern Railway 3-1 in the Joe Fernandis Memorial hockey tournament at Astro Park, Bandra, on Friday. Rajat Sharma scored the third goal for CTC while Amit pulled one back for N Rly. In another match, Mumbai Port Trust beat Union Bank 2-1. Stephen S scored both goals for MbPT while Chirnath S netted one for UBI.

MFA: Union Bank derail Western Railway

Union Bank of India romped to a massive 8-1 win over Western Railway in a Premier (Corporate) Division match of the Mumbai Football Association (MFA) League at the Neville D’Souza ground, Bandra. Strikers Rushikesh Pandey and Lalith Bangera struck two goals each while Elvin Fernandes, Tyson Patel, Brandon Fernandes and Sarvesh Bangar chipped in with one to complete the tally. Western Railway scored their lone goal through Reuben D’Souza.

Meanwhile, in a Div-I match, Veniza Virar FC beat Desperadoes FC 2-0. Rohit Singh and Pratik Parab scored for the Virar outfit. The pairing of Rajesh D’Souza and Shailesh Daga from Bombay Gym defeated Ajit Bhide and Chandrashekhar Pitre 30-11 in the Men’s  Combination 110+ quarter-finals to set up a last four clash with Gym mates Gautam Ashra and Gautam Lad in the G D Birla Memorial Masters Badminton Tournament, organised by Badminton 45, managed by Badminton Gurukul and hosted by Bombay Gymkhana. 

Ashra  and Lad were stretched till the final rally before getting the better of Sachin Mehta and Yogesh Sanghvi 30-28. The other semi-final will pit Country Club’s Kaushik Kamdar and Pankaj Gandhi against Andheri Recreation Club’s Abhay Naik and Anoopkumar Shukla. While Kamdar and Gandhi beat Basil Jacob and Savio Lamb 30-12, Naik and Shukla got the better of Maneck Daruwala and Radharamanan Panicker 30-19. The Professional Singles quarter-finals saw Shubham More scoring an upset 30-22 victory over second seed Premal Mankar.
