Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo wants grid girls to stay even as Formula One bosses mull over assessing age-old tradition

Even as Formula One bosses are mulling over axing grid girls as the sport looks to review the 50-year-old tradition, Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo has called for the tradition to continue."It's what you grew up with. I guess as a kid, you see the umbrella girls, the grid girls. It's part of the attraction of the sport," Ricciardo told British tabloid The Daily Star.

The grid girls' official duties include holding their grid numbers, hold umbrellas before standing on the podium, but recent races have seen the practice slammed. "We're trying to respect all parties. There's a lot of respect the tradition of the grid girls and there are people who feel that it has become a bit dated, so we're addressing that," said managing director of F1 Ross Brawn. Other solutions have been tried to eliminate the opposition of the grid girls in the past. At the Monaco Grand Prix in 2015, male models were used on the grid.
