An outstanding show from midfielder-turned-goalkeeper Sneha Mirgal helped Udayachal High School (Vikhroli) win 1-0 on penalties against Rajhans Vidyalaya (Andheri) during the knockouts of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association-organised inter-school girls under-16 Division II football tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.
After finishing goalless, both teams headed into the tiebreaker. Sneha, who decided to take over goalkeeping responsibilities from regular 'keeper Armaiti Wadia, was successful in blocking shots from Rajhans' Melissa Fernandes, Chaitali Shetty and Riya Tagore. Averil Pinto and Sonal Yadav were unable to score as their shots went wide.
When it came to Udayachal's turn, Virati Gutka's goal proved to be the difference between the two sides. Siddhi Borgaonkar, Sneha Mirgal and skipper Riya Panchal missed their target.
Sneha's eyes are now set to the final. "This victory means a lot to all of us. The girls are very talented. From here on, we will look to reach the finals," she told mid-day yesterday.
