Au00a0notorious criminal, Bitu Wilson John (36), was murdered around 9 pm in Rupi Nagar yesterday, said police sources.
An official at the Dehu Road police station said immediately after the attack on him, John was taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital, where he was declared dead around 9.30 pm.
The body was then shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem.
"The body had sharp and deep cuts on the head, leg, stomach and hand," said Dr D Pakhare, CMO, YCM Hospital. "He had lost blood and we are not sure if he died on the spot or on the way. The moment he reached hospital, we declared him dead."
According to a police official who was previously posted at the Nigdi police station, John had serious crimes registered against him.
"He was charged with murder, kidnapping, attempt to murder and dacoity. There were around 20 to 25 cases registered. We had detained him numerous times in the past and currently he was supplying illegal electric power by stealing from MSEB," said the official.
Members of John's family and friends were seen gathered in front of the mortuary, waiting for the post-mortem results. They were observed to be in a foul mood.
John was murdered in front of the Datta Mandir.
The mandir was built by him, and this fact made the police suspect the crime might have been committed by someone he knew.
"It could be someone very close because no one would have dared to touch him otherwise. It does not seem a planned act, but a very impulsive one," said a police official.
Officials from the Dehu Road police station, where the offence was registered, were questioning members of John's family and his friends.
"The officials are at YCM and recording statements of the people close to him. Apart from that there isn't much we can say at this point," said a constable from the police station.
