India registered a daily increase of 774 Covid-19 cases, maintaining 4,187 active cases, as per the Union Health Ministry's Saturday update. Within 24 hours, one death each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat was reported.

Until December 5, everyday cases were in the double digits. However, due to cold weather and the advent of a new Covid-19 variety, JN.1, there was a revival. The biggest single-day surge of 841 instances was observed on December 31, 2023, accounting for 0.2 per cent of the peak cases in May 2021, a report in PTI stated.

According to official sources, the majority (over 92 per cent of active cases) are being treated at home, indicating that the JN.1 variation has not resulted in a significant increase in new cases, hospitalisations, or fatalities, the PTI report added.

The news agency's official source said, "The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality."

According to the report, India was hit by three waves of Covid-19, the most severe of which occurred in April-June 2021. On May 7, 2021, there were 4,14,188 cases and 3,915 deaths at the peak of this wave.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the country has registered over 4.5 crore illnesses and over 5.3 lakh fatalities. According to the ministry's data, nearly 4.4 crore people have successfully recovered, representing a countrywide recovery rate of 98.81 per cent.

According to official records, India has administered 220.67 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccinations to date, the report added.

Earlier, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj noted a pattern of an increase in Corona cases in South India followed by an increase in cases in North India. While asking citizens not to panic, he emphasised the critical need for measures.

"All the positive cases coming in RTPCR test, we are sending those samples for genome sequencing. Currently, there is not a single positive case of the new variant in Delhi," Minister Bhardwaj said providing insight into the testing and monitoring process that is in place.
